Eastern Suburbs gardens are usually the smallest we work on, and that makes them fussier rather than easier. When the whole garden is visible from the kitchen, an uneven edge or a hedge that has crept out of line is the first thing anyone notices.
Access is the other constant. Terraces with a side gate, apartment courtyards reached through a building, street parking that takes ten minutes to find. It is all workable, it just has to be planned rather than turned up to.
Closer to the water, at Bondi, Bronte and Clovelly, salt exposure comes into it as well, which narrows down what will last in an exposed courtyard.
