The service

A straight line is harder than it looks

A hedge is the most visible thing in most gardens, and the least forgiving. Get the line wrong and everyone sees it from the street for the next six months, because it does not grow back overnight.

We cut to a set line rather than just taking the tips off, keep the face slightly tapered so the bottom gets light and does not go bare, and square the top properly instead of following whatever shape the hedge has drifted into.

Timing matters too. Cut at the wrong point in the season and you either stress the plant or lose the flush of growth that fills it back out.

What’s included

What a hedge trim covers

Whether it is one screening hedge or every boundary on the property.

  • Faces and top cut to a set line
  • Height reduction where a hedge has got away
  • Shaping and maintaining topiary
  • Ladder work on tall boundary hedges
  • Clearing growth off fences, paths and gutters
  • All cuttings raked up and removed

We work with murraya, lilly pilly, photinia, buxus, viburnum and most of the other screening plants used around Sydney. Tell us what you have and we will tell you how it should be cut.

How often

How often a hedge needs doing

It depends on the plant and how sharp you want it, but these are the patterns we see most.

Quarterly

Formal and sharp

For buxus, topiary and anything you want holding a crisp edge all year.

Twice a year

Most screening hedges

A cut going into spring and another after the summer flush keeps most boundaries in shape.

Yearly

Low key boundaries

Slower growing hedges, or where you just want it kept off the fence and out of the path.

One off

Bringing it back

An overgrown hedge cut back to a workable size and shape, then left to fill back in.

An overgrown hedge sometimes has to come back in stages rather than all at once, so it does not end up bare and brown. If that is the case we will say so before we start.

Why it matters

Privacy, street appeal and light

Most hedges are there to do a job. Screening a neighbour, blocking a road, holding a boundary. Let one go and it stops doing that job well and starts doing others you did not ask for, like shading the lawn and filling the gutters.

Kept on a schedule, a hedge stays dense right to the ground, holds its height, and does more for the look of a property from the street than almost anything else you can spend money on.

Hedging pairs naturally with lawn mowing, and most customers have us do both on the same visit.
