Local conditions
North Shore gardens are generally older and more established than the rest of Sydney, and that brings its own set of problems. Mature trees throw a lot of shade, so lawn struggles in patches and nothing much wants to grow underneath them.
The soil tends towards clay, which holds water instead of draining it, and plenty of blocks slope away from the house. Both make drainage and bed preparation more important than they would be on flatter, sandier ground.
There is also a lot of hedging up here. Formal boundaries, screening between neighbours, and hedges tall enough that keeping them square is a job in itself.
